What is a Birthstone?

What is a Birthstone?

Birthstone are gemstones which accompany a birth name along with them. Each of which has a unique and historical significance. It is not a new topic to be discussed, each of one knows that its popularity dates back to the ancient times, when it was believed that gems had phenomenal powers of getting you luck, health and prosperity. Each month is accompanied with a gemstone, but for a few months there are multiple. You can refer the below chart. And yes, those Birthstones used for a month in ancient times are not necessarily same today. In ancient times the most important feature of a gemstone was the color and so they were not able to distinguish between gems as we do today. For example, Ruby and a Garnet are of the same color. So in those days they both were same.

The collection of precious and semi precious gemstones are Birthstones. Now, we need to know from where this idea came that a birthstone is associated with a month?. By the way, Each stone represents a month of the Gregorian calendar.

History of Birthstone

History of Birthstone

This thought of month wise allocation of gemstones can be traced back to the Breastplate of Aaron that was described in the book of Exodus in the Bible. A religious garment set with twelve gemstones that represented the twelve tribes of Israelis the breastplate. The gems were set in four rows of three: Sardius, topaz and carbuncle; Emerald, sapphire and Diamond; Ligure, agate and  amethyst; Andberyl, onyx and Jasper.

The writings of Flavius Josephus (1st century AD) and St. Jerome (5th century AD) made a relation between the 12 stones in the Breastplate and the 12 signs of the zodiac. Each of which has special powers associated with the corresponding astrological sign. And that wearing the right  stone at the right time would bring various benefits.
While today, each birthstone carries special characteristics. It is believed to hold true to the one who is wearing it.
