Suicidal thoughts do not necessarily mean that you are weak or crazy. The pain is so overwhelming at that moment that you feel helpless. How to deal with suicidal thoughts on your own.
Give yourself some distance between thoughts and action
The number one step is to promise yourself that you won’t do anything drastic during that time. Thoughts and actions are two different things. So, just wait!. I know you are in tremendous pain. But give time to yourself. Don’t let your suicidal thoughts become reality.
Avoid drugs and alcohol
A big no to drugs and alcohol. They tend to reduce your inhibitions and make it more likely you could do something you will regret the next day. Even if you don’t experience suicidal ideation it is still a good idea to cut down alcohol.
Reduce the risk
Make your home safe. Ensure there is no stuff like knives, razors, rope, a poison which can harm you. Keep all the dangerous objects out of immediate reach. Locking such objects make it a little harder to act impulsively.
Talk to someone right now
Keeping feelings to yourself is the worst idea. When you have suicidal thinking seek for help. Talk to your friends, therapist,family, etc and tell them how you are feeling. Take professional help. Don’t feel ashamed for seeking help. They will still love you.
Lower your expectation
It’s ok if things don’t work out the way you wanted. Love yourself and others the way they are. Because many expectations lead to disappointments. A small achievement with happiness is far better than big ones with stress.
Start breaking suicidal thinking habit
You cannot stop thoughts entering your mind, but you can definitely stop inviting them. Stay away from negative thoughts and action. Stay focused on the good things and leave no space for suicidal ideation in your head. If it still haunts you, distract your mind to something worthy.
Things you should do while coping with suicidal ideation.
1. Read or think positive things about yourself.
2. You can write down your feelings about suicidal thoughts and how you overcome it. You can read this later to keep going. This is a very effective method.
3. Distract yourself from such thoughts. Do something you like. For eg; Read a book, listen music, watching a movie, sports,playing games, dancing,cooking etc.
4. Get a good night’s sleep. Begin with a new fresh day next morning.
5. Go to a place where you a safe.(public place). So that you don’t harm yourself.
